Commission (online): $29.95 for up to 1000 shares, then .03 per share; $149.95 for 5000 shares. Broker-assisted: start at $39 ($82.40 for 100 shares @40), go up into the hundreds ($265 for 5000 shares @$20; $705 for 5000 shares @$100). Options: $37.50 + $1.75 per contract and up (based on value); $39 minimum. Margin rate: 7 1/4% to 9 1/4% (high). Money fund yield with sweep: 5%. Account minimum: $5000 (online); otherwise, no minimum; $2000 (margin). IRA annual fee: free; setup and closing fees not known. Olde Discount (1-800-USA-OLDE) (http://www.olde.com): Commissions: start at $20-$40 for 100 shares, and go up sharply, to $152.50-$325 for 5000 shares. $77.50-$175 for 2000 shares. Penny Stock: $15 + .03 per share ($20 minimum). Options: $40 and up. Account minimum: no minimum, $2000 (margin). Perks: Customers who maintain $500,000 in their accounts can trade commission-free. Special rates for round turns within 30 days. Customers can BUY commission-free IF they order 1000 shares or more, but on sales the regular commission applies. Overall service rating: if you want a personal broker, good. Comments: Former customers have made serious charges against Olde brokers who tried to sell them stocks they didnt want. Typical comments: I used them for several years and [their suggestions] caused me to lose quite a bit of money. My broker advised me to purchase 5 stocks. . .and every one of the five has gone down. They bought stocks on my account without my authorization. . .and it went do.
Kennedy-Cabot (http://www.stockup.com/quote/cabot.sht) (1-800-252-0090): Commissions: start at $33 ($30 + $3 fee) for 100-600 shares, then they go up: $83 for 1600 shares @5. Odd Lots (1-99 shares): $23 ($20 + $3 fee). Options: $30 + $1.50-$3.00 per contract. Margin rate: Brokers call +0% to 1/2% (very low). Money fund yield with sweep: 4.71%. Account minimum: not known, $2000 (margin). Real time quotes: by touch-tone phone. Perks: 392 no-load no-fee mutual funds; others at $25. Overall service rating: good. Comments: Founded in 1960. No online service yet. Customers have offered mixed comments. Service is good. Will negotiate lower commissions for good customers. In five years, I have never had a problem. They will not confirm time and stamp of fill, and his options orders have not been knowledgeably handled. Bidwell (1-800-547-6337) (http://www.bidwell.com): Commission (online): about $6 less than regular; one customer says 100 shares of MSFT @ $22 Internet and $28 for broker. Commission (regular): $21.25 ($20 + 1.25 fee) plus .05-.08 per share up to 500 shares, then $30-$45 + .03 per share; $26.25-$29.25 for 100 shares; $60-$75 for 1000 shares; $180-$195 for 5000 shares. Penny stock: 5% of principal ($21.25 minimum). Options: $27 + $3.00 per contract. Margin rate: 7.75%-8.75% (above average). Account minimum: no minimum. Real time quotes: free. Perks: 281 no-load no-fee mutual funds. Overall non-online service rating: very good. Comments: Service reported as very good: I have been completely happy with them.(4/9) A real person will talk to you with a minimum of wait and electronic prompts.(4/19) Confirms trades on the phone. One customer says that if you insist on high-quality service, their commissions are pretty competitive. Executions have been good, no price improvement though..
